Common CS2 trading scams and how to avoid them
Nearly every CS2 scam relies on the same thing: getting you to hurry or to trust something you didn't verify. Knowing the common patterns makes most of them easy to spot.
Fake middlemen
A stranger, or a second account they control, offers to hold items while both sides trade. Once you hand your items over, the middleman disappears. Trades on CSTradeHub happen directly between two players, so nobody ever needs a middleman. If someone insists on one, walk away.
Phishing and fake login pages
- Steam never asks you to log in through a link in a comment or message. Check the address bar for steamcommunity.com before you type anything.
- Never share your Steam Guard codes or approve a login you did not start.
- Sharing your Steam trade URL is fine. Sharing your password, API key or authenticator codes is not.
Bait and switch in the trade window
Someone swaps the offer just before you accept, changing the wear, adding a cheaper item with the same name, or removing a sticker. Read every item on the accept screen. Compare the float and pattern to the listing, and never accept on autopilot.
API key scams
If a scammer gets your Steam API key, they can cancel your real offer and replace it with a copy from a lookalike account. Revoke your API key at steamcommunity.com/dev/apikey if you ever entered it on a site you don't fully trust, and check the partner's name and profile on every offer.
A short checklist
- Trade directly and never use a third-party middleman.
- Check the partner's profile age, level and trade history.
- Compare each item in the Steam window with the listing.
- Confirm the trade in the Steam mobile app, and read the details on the confirmation screen.
- If something feels rushed, slow down or cancel.
