How to check for a trade hold before you trade CS2 skins
You agree on a swap, send the offer, and then find out the items are stuck for days. A trade hold is one of the most common ways a CS2 trade goes wrong, and you can usually spot it before it costs you time.
What a trade hold is
Steam sometimes delays items after a trade is accepted. The items move only after the hold ends, and a cancelled hold returns them to the sender. Holds protect accounts from theft, so they mostly appear when an account looks new or changed.
Common causes
- The Steam Mobile Authenticator was turned on recently. Steam commonly wants it active for about a week before trades go through without a delay.
- You signed in on a new device or browser.
- You changed your password or Steam Guard settings.
- Steam has applied a trade protection period to specific items you received. The tradable date is visible on the item in your inventory.
How to check before you trade
- Open your own inventory and look for a tradable-after date on the items you plan to offer.
- Ask your partner whether they have a hold, and read their answer against the trade page. CSTradeHub shows a warning on a trade when the poster currently has one.
- Send a small test trade if you are unsure, then check the confirmation screen in the Steam mobile app. The app tells you how long any hold lasts before you confirm.
What to do if a hold is unavoidable
Decide whether you are happy to wait, and say so in the comments before the trade. If one side needs items immediately, look for a partner without a hold. Valve changes these rules from time to time, so check Steam Support for the current durations.
